Recommendations for Lilac Care
Planting Lilacs
Lilacs grow best in full sun. A good well-drained loamy soil with a ph of 6 to 7 is ideal for lilacs. In our area, the soil is mostly acidic so lime should be added to the soil to raise the ph. Lime can be added at the time of planting and again in the spring and fall. Lilacs do not grow well in wet areas. If drainage is a problem, planting lilacs on mounds is advisable. Poor soils can be amended with compost or good loam to improve conditions. Planting is best in spring or fall.
Generally container-grown plants can be planted most any time with attention to proper watering. Lilacs should not be planted any deeper than they are in the container or the root ball if they are balled and burlapped. A light mulching will help keep the plant from drying out and keep the weeds under control. The best time to fertilize lilacs is in the early spring and again right after they have flowered. An all-purpose fertilizer is best (5-10-5 or 10-10-10).
Lilac Pruning
A light pruning each year is advisable. The best time to prune is right after they have flowered. This year’s new growth will produce next year's flowers. Pruning late in the season cuts off next year’s flowers. Cutting off spent flowers helps to promote growth and more flowers next year.
To rejuvenate an older plant it is recommended to cut a third of the old stems about 6" above the ground level each year for three years.
